Since its launch in September 2016 as Musical.ly, TikTok came a long way, incorporating numerous challenges, competitions, and celebrity appearances. If you want to gain massive following, and fan base, TikTok could be the thing you needed all along.
Having landed on our website, you must already know about TikTok, what it does, and how it does. That is why, I will not waste your time talking about the app itself; rather I shall go straight into tips and ways of accomplishing your desire to become an influencer.
The TikTok’s algorithm is of the most basic of all other social media platforms. Simply put, once you post a video, which is usually 15 seconds long, there is about 2 hours before its distribution. The video will be shown to 200-250 people first, and whether they watch your video or not, their activity is recorded. The next round of distribution of your post will depend on their reactions to it, the number of likes, comments and/or shares plus the two factors:
- First and the most important metric is completion rate, or what percentage of people watched the entire video.
- The second is average watch time.
Obviously, you have heard many people say make your content different or be unique, or advices of these kind. This piece, on the other hand, is going to give you some precise tips and instructions, which you could implement right away, even if you are new to TikTok.
Originality & Authenticity
The golden rule of every social profile on any social media platform is that you need to be authentic, which is true across all social media including TikTok as the platform’s nature is all about self-expression. In addition, people watch other people do crazy things, because they either enjoy or feel like they relate. Plus, people easily can notice when someone is faking. And, being authentic already makes you different, because it is you, there is only one of you, and that does not mean that you can do whatever you heart desires and hope for the following to show up out of the blue. The quality of the content and its uniqueness are both factors that need to be considered. Genuine face can be recognized even through the cameras.
For example: if you are passionate about football, you could put 15 seconds of the incredible football moments or the goals, or just post the crazy moments from sports in general, or things done by yourself. For example, you happen to be good at basketball, and you could dunk 3 score goals or dribble like crazy? Shoot it in 15-second videos and post in on TikTok. You could even make whole series of tutorial-type videos. Who does it that way?
Niche & Scarcity
Another very important point that you should always keep in mind is having a niche. What it means is finding something you are passionate about and basing your content on it. Good example of it the vines which used to be very popular reaching a point where there was a specific app being dedicated for them. If, you wish to be in that, you need to make a specific form of the videos centered on one topic. Let us say, it could be you and your girlfriend’s pranks, or if you wish to enter the lip-synch, then you might choose to sing only in a certain genre of your choice, or a set of genres. They are just examples you really don’t need to convince your girlfriend to prank, or vise-versa.
It is also important that your niche is a rather rare activity, something that has not been tried out before like the lip-synch videos on the platform. That is where you need to get creative and shine through all your personality, and self-express in a creative manner like no any other TikToker does.
Furthermore, you need to limit the amount of hashtags on TikTok, 4 – 8 in most instances, which means you need to be very careful and goal oriented. You can use about half of your hashtags for your target group while being general with the rest of them. In fact, hashtags were originally created to categorize the videos uploaded, thus hashtagging every video you put out on #foryou, or #tiktok might get you some exposure and views, but it is the more specific ones that get you followers and likes. Having great content goes without saying.
For example, hashtag: #tiktokmeme has been viewed more than 3 million times. While the hashtag: #tiktok is on 52% of all post on the platform. A good example of a target-oriented hashtag would be #letsdolunch, #bowlingsecrets #fail etc. the rest is up to your imagination.
Many go on to say that you need to post at least once a week if not more, while some say just a couple of times a day. I would say that you post a video a day, and keep it coming consistently, try to time it as well. Obviously, I do not mean to say post everyday sharply at noon, or at 7pm, just keep a certain time period, like mornings or evenings, or afternoons. I recommend you choose noon or the time when most people have lunch in your location or time from dawn of noon until the dawn of evening. Because, not everyone wakes up and starts to consume content, while most people could be with friends or families during the evenings, noon is left as a perfect time to wander about virtually, while they still have charge in their phones and mood in their hearts to do so.
Remember, it is not the regularity of your posts that attract new followers, it is the quality of the content and its uniqueness that brings in more views and followers alike. Likewise, it is important to engage with your audience and be proactive. That simply shows that you see them, which bears loyal viewers.
If you have been following the Gary Vees pictures there is the time hightlighted in yellow. and in this example, he has a few hours of gap between his posts. However, as a newbie, it is not suggested to go full on crazy and post every few hours. He can do it, because he has millions of followers also that is what he does for living.
Challenges & Duets
Of course, you need, like absolutely need to have duets with other TikTokers. Obviously, you should not go around duetting Trump, no seriously don’t duet him. Anyways, the idea is that you need to choose the right type of people to duet with, for example if you were in the Vine world, then it would have been advised to be duetting within your niche. That way you can get more exposure faster.
Challenges are great ways to improve on. Trends on TikTok change quite fast. Thus, making sure you stay up-to-date and relevant could alone make you among the top TikTok stars, especially if timed right, and one of the ways you can ensure to be the early one on the trend is to watch a few videos on the “ForYou” Page. And if you seem to spot same dances, moves, soundtracks again and again, that’s what is trending.
Use Compelling Captions
There are a few myths and truths when it comes to captions on TikTok. Many people think it is the hashtags that make your videos go viral. While it is true for some videos, it is quite wrong when it comes to the majority of them. It is the captions that make the video go viral most of the time, and having a caption that asks a question or intrigues, or give new information or simply a short story about the video have been known to work well. You can stick to these above formulas until you figure what captions your videos are doing great on. For example: “morning breakfast be like” and show yourself gobbling up food, or “does your dog do this”, and show your dog doing something a bit unusual.
This has been a very popular trick on Instagram, and is said to work quite good on TikTok. You need to follow, as many people from the niche pages that you are also in. These days, people get that if you follow, they need to follow you back. In addition, even if they don’t follow you back, at the least they will check out your content. That adds a view, or more. On the off chance that none of that happen, you can unfollow them after a week or so. And it helps to comment and be active on pages you are related, that adds to the chances of them coming to check out your material. Another quick tip on top of the ones we have given is to keep your account clear from cluster and have a theme or so to say tone of the way your posts organized, as in the example beside.
Take a note…
- Be authentic and genuine
- Choose niche and scarce theme
- Post regularly
- Partake in challenges and do duets
- Use compelling captions
- And use the follow and unfollow method
Despite the platform being new and with tons of opportunity for organic growth, it could be a little tough in the beginning. However, if you keep posting consistently good quality content, creative and unique and engaging with your audience, you are sure to become the next Tik Tok star.
